It’s easy to get lost in the daily humdrum of business and practicalities and forget to feed your passions. As an event organiser, keeping creative is the most important thing you can do, but under pressure it’s easy to slow down or fall into the same patterns for convenience. Here’s our guide to how you can stay creative.

1) Do something different each day

I really can’t stress how important this is. I’m not saying you have to go out and bungee jump or roller skate to work; it’s great if you can but doing something different can be as subtle as watching a new TV programme, taking a different route home, or simply doing an everyday task completely differently. Even these smaller changes activate the part of your brain that deals with problem solving and creativity. By seeing tasks with having more possibilities, you begin to break out of any familiar, linear patterns.

2) Read as much and as widely as you can

Not just books either. Consume as many radio programmes, films, performances, art, and music as possible. There’s always something you can bring to your event from the entertainment arts.

3) Don’t be afraid of making mistakes

I know this is one of those pieces of advice that sounds easier than it is but it really is important. If you’re afraid of making mistakes then you will keep to the format you know. But if you accept that you will do things differently and it WILL take a lot longer because not everything will go to plan first time, then you can really do incredible things. A truly great event planner understands that failures beforehand make a success on the night all the more worth it.

4) Look in the right places

Entertainment arts are a good start, but subscribing to the right places online is great too. I really recommend Reddit for discovery. Subreddits like /r/GetMotivated , /r/ListenToThis and /r/DIY are fantastic for seeing inspiring new content.

5) Do things your way.

This is the one thing that often gets left off these kind of lists. Sure it’s great to take little bits and pieces from things that you see, but it’s also important to remember that you too can be a source of inspiration. If you play by the rules, follow the patterns and stick to the status quo, you may be successful; but when you do things totally different, people will remember that the day was truly special.
