LiveLeak has become the latest video streaming website to ban videos showing any future beheadings carried out by IS.

The UK based website was the next stop for some internet users searching for the Jame Foley murder video, after YouTube began removing them earlier this week.

But on Thursday the site operators announced: “We will not be showing further beheadings carried out by IS”.

They added: “”We’ve shown the world the true horror of this form of execution more than once in the past and we cannot find any compelling reason to even be thought of as promoting the actions of this group.”

The website, whose tagline is “redefining the media”, has achieved notoriety throughout the internet since it was established in 2006 by the same group who founded Ogrish.com – the shock website.

The move has been praised on Reddit and Twitter for responsibly handling the promotion of a “terrorist organisation”

But they have also been criticised by some LiveLeak users for going back on their principles of openness and empowering informed citizen journalism.

“Our belief in your rights to view whatever you wish do not override our rights to not host it here.”

They stressed that the ban is limited only to ISIS beheading videos, and added that the website will still continue to show graphic videos.

LiveLeak now joins YouTube, Twitter in Facebook in drawing a line on ISIS material.

The news comes ahead of the announcement by the non profit social network Diaspora that they cannot prevent the spread of extremist material from IS.

It is believed that IS has switched to Diaspora after Twitter began removing images and accounts.

Diaspora’s creators have said that they are “concerned” by the news. They explained that the network is spread across several independent servers that are not controlled by the team.
