Yesterday AVE Services provided unveiling curtains, a PA system, projector screen & green carpet to Reading Buses’ grand opening of their new gas bus filling station.
The site is the first of its kind in the UK and was unveiled by Baroness Susan Kramer, Minister of State for Transport.
She said: “Reading has been so successful in going green and bus operators want lower running costs which is part of what you are seeing here today.
“This investment made in the filling station is a major contribution to the town with a better service to customers and better air quality for the population of Reading as well.”
The filling station will power the 40% of the Reading Buses fleet that are either gas or hybrid powered.
Following a successful bid for funding, Reading Borough Council is to convert 113 black cabs to operate on compressed natural gas (CNG) too. CNG is cheaper and more efficient than diesel and gives off far less emissions.
James Freeman, chief executive of Reading Transport, said: “Not only do we have one of the biggest fleets of vehicles powered by bio-methane in the country, but we have the largest – and most comprehensive – fuel compression storage and delivery system in the UK bus industry.”
