Sandisk has created an SD card with 512GB or storage space – the highest capacity ever released.

The card, which is aimed at film-makers using 4K resolution in their projects, will go on sale for £490.

It is believed that a 512GB card could store 30 hours of HD footage.

The launch comes only decade after Sandisk released a card with just 512mb of storage. Analysts believe that SD cards could eventually hold up to 2TB of data.

Dinesh Bahal, vice-president of product marketing at SanDisk said: “4K Ultra HD is an example of a technology that is pushing us to develop new storage solutions capable of handling massive file sizes.”

While many consumers turn to the cloud for storage, the release of the new memory card aligns with the public’s affinity to local storage. In the light of recent security and privacy issues with cloud storage, there still seems to be a place for consumers having a tangible storage option.
