In 2004 Faringdon became the first town in the South East of England to achieve Fairtrade Town status. Faringdon is notable for the dyed pigeons at Faringdon House, a custom started by the eccentric Lord Berners in the early 20th Century.

Faringdon House was originally damaged in the English Civil War. Its owner at the time, a royalist named Sir Robert Pye was besieged by his own son, a parliamentary leader. Faringdon House is currently owned by writer Sofka Ziovieff.

Since 2004, Faringdon has held an arts festival over one weekend in early July.
