In a groundbreaking ruling, the US Federal Aviation Administration has permitted six film and television companies to use drones to shoot scenes.

The FAA has reversed previously tight restrictions on the commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems – but there are still limitations. The aircraft will not operate at night and must be inspected before each flight.

The US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told the BBC: “Today’s announcement is a significant milestone in broadening commercial UAS use while ensuring we maintain our world-class safety record in all forms of flight.”

Often associated to controversial military tactics, commercial potential for the drones (known as Octocopters) is becoming increasingly possible.

Late last year online retailing giant Amazon announced that they were testing drones to deliver packages up to 2.3kg within 30 minutes.

Google are also developing Project Wing – a drone project which will deliver goods and aid to remote locations.
